100 year old WWII Army Hero Demands promised Medal of Honor

By Mirta Piccoli - Thursday, July 24, 2008

(PRAvenueNW) On June 2nd, 2008, Manuel Perez Garcia a WWII and Bay of Pigs veteran filed a Petition for Writ of Mandamus (case # 1:08CV597) in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. President Bush, Vice President Cheney and various other government officials are listed as respondents.

Mr. Perez-Garcia is a decorated U.S. Army veteran that was held captive in a Cuban jail for over two years during the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. Mr. Perez-Garcia has a letter dated August 6th, 1962 sent to his daughter while he was being labeled a "Phony Hero" by a plethora of U.S. based Newspapers and televised news agencies. This letter states that the U.S. Department of State chose to deliberately lie to the American people in an effort to hide the U.S. government involvement in the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Mr. Perez-Garcia will be 100 years old on July 29th, 2008 and has maintained his silence for over forty years. He now is petitioning the government to honor its obligation to one of this country's greatest unsung heroes. Mr. Perez-Garcia contends that in 1945 he was promised a Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during WWII by President Harry Truman when Mr. Perez-Garcia was taken to Washington to personally meet the President and various Senators. Mr. Perez-Garcia contends that a mix-up occurred and another soldier by the name of Manuel Perez Jr. was awarded the Medal of Honor instead. Mr. Perez-Garcia has valiantly fought for Democratic ideals his entire life and feels as though the U.S. government has failed him in restoring his honor. During the Bay of Pigs invasion the U.S. government and media disparaged Mr. Perez-Garcia as a phony war hero. Subsequently causing untold hardships on Mr. Perez-Garcia and his family. In this time of War, this is a striking example of how delinquent the government has been in honoring the heroic sacrifices of one of its greatest patriots.
